How Radiofrequency Ablation is Performed

After numbing the skin, a small needle is advanced into position using fluoroscopic guidance (X-ray). Once the needle is accurately placed, sensory and motor testing is performed to confirm proper positioning. Then an electrode generates heat to disable the sensory nerves innervating the specific joints being treated. Once the nerve is disabled, pain signals can no longer be communicated to the brain. The entire procedure occurs within minutes and can be done in our procedure suite.
