Facet Injections – Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar

WHAT ARE FACET INJECTIONS?

A facet joint block is an injection of local anesthetic into one or more of the small joints located along the side of each vertebrae on both sides of the spine. Multiple injections may be delivered depending on how many joints are involved. Facet injections are typically requested for patients who have pain primarily in their back.

BENEFITS OF FACET INJECTIONS

The best benefit of a Facet Injection is the rapid relief of symptoms which provides comfort for the patient immediately.

Another benefit to facet joint injections is that it can be used as a diagnostic test to see if the pain is actually coming from the facet joints. If your pain disappears with the injection, then it is clear that the pain is originating from the joint.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR THE PROCEDURE?

If you are taking any blood thinners, these medications must be discontinued well before the procedure. You will be directed by our staff as to when you should stop this medication. No solid food or fluids after midnight prior to the procedure unless directed otherwise. Diabetics should not take their medication for diabetes until after the procedure is complete.  Please make you make our Apex Pain Doctors aware that you are taking a blood thinner, and contact your primary care physician or prescribing physician before stopping this medication.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE PROCEDURE AT APEX IN CHANDLER?

When you come to Apex in Chandler for your Facet Injection, the procedure will be done with you lying on your stomach. An (IV) line may be started in your hand or arm to give fluids and/or medication to help you to relax. Your back will be thoroughly cleansed with an antiseptic soap by a practitioner.  You may feel a brief stinging or burning sensation while your back is being numbed with injections of local anesthetic using a very small needle; which will go away in about 15 seconds.  Once the needles are in the proper location, a local anesthetic medication will be injected, and the needles will be removed. After the injections have been completed you will be moved to the recovery area, where your vital signs will be monitored for an appropriate time, usually about 20-30 minutes. You will be given verbal and written discharge instructions, and you will be able to leave with your driver after your doctor authorizes discharge.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

After receiving the Facet Injection(s) you will typically be observed for 15-25 minutes after procedure. You will be allowed to resume normal medications and eat after you leave the office. You will be able to walk after procedure but should avoid other activities for the rest of the day.

A diagnostic facet injection will most likely contain an anesthetic which will wear off in a few hours to a day. A therapeutic facet injection will contain both anesthetic and steroid.  The steroid medication may take 24-72 hours and up to 1-2 weeks to begin relieving pain.

Repeat injections may be considered depending on pain relief provided. Otherwise, facet injections may be precursors to other therapeutic measures. These can be discussed with your healthcare provider and the Doctors at Apex Pain Specialists.

WILL THE INJECTION HURT A LOT?

Each person’s response to any procedure will differ. although many patients claim the procedure is quite painless.

WILL I HAVE ANY RESTRICTIONS AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

You may not drive for the remainder of the day after your procedure. You will need a driver to check you out and take you home.  No heat, tub bath, shower or soaking in water is to be used on the injected area for the remainder of the day.  You may resume normal diet and medications after the procedure unless directed otherwise by your doctor.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS AND SIDE EFFECTS?

As with most injection procedures, there is a remote risk of bleeding, infection, nerve injury, or allergic reaction to the medications used. All side effects and risks can be discussed with an Apex Pain Doctor prior to your procedure.
